CULTIVATION: Make the first sowings in early April in rows 12 ins. Apart, covering the seeds to a depth of ¾ in. Make monthly sowings at intervals until the end of July, according to needs.
There was a variety of carrot known as the Chertsey Red, because it was first grown in Chertsey, although it is now also known as the Long Red Surrey.
According to the 1822 Encyclopaedia of Gardening, “there are some good gardens near Chertsey, & here the Chertsey or great Surrey carrot, is better grown than anywhere else. It produces orange roots with a distinctive yellow core, & has a quite exceptional flavour.”
